We were in a sandwich shop in Gloucester in the early afternoon, trying to decide what to order. A guy came in, and he and Cindy had a short exchange about something Seinfeld. Later, when we were in line, I noticed he had a Lenny Kaye T-shirt on and mentioned it to her. She asked the guy if it was, in fact, Lenny Kaye on his shirt, and he said, "yeah, are you going to the show?" We were like, what?

Lenny Kaye is best known as Patti Smith's guitarist, and is a writer of rock music, music in general and other things, I guess, and has a radio show, etc, etc. In 1972 he put together a now legendary album compilation of garage rock songs. So he's recently done a handful of shows around the country to celebrate its ~50th anniversary. We just happened to be in town at the same time as the show.

So the guy, named Rick, told us about the show. He had something to do with putting it together, I'm still not sure what. But while we were waiting for our sandwiches, he went to his car and got the LP of the show they did in North Carolina, and showed it to us. I thought it would be great to go to the show, but I didn't know what our plans were with Cindy's friend, so I was noncommittal. So by the time we decided we had no plans, and agreed that we should go to the show, we checked for tickets, and they were sold out.

I located Rick and Instagram and sent him a message say it was cool to run into him, but the show was sold out. He wasn't looking at IG, of course. After dinner that evening, we stopped at a cemetery. On our way out, I said we should walk down to the theater. Cindy was hesitant due to the distance, but we decided to go. I thought maybe I'd get a selfie with the marquee or a poster. But we decided to look inside. Cindy asked the guy at the door if they still had tickets. He thought they might, so we went back to check. Someone had just returned a pair! We got in!

It was a string of coincidences that got us there, and the show was a lot of fun. And we waited in line to meet Lenny afterward.

The show had quite a few different musicians. There were usually anywhere from eight to eleven musicians on stage, and the lineup was constantly rotating. Peter Buck (of REM) was there. Greg Hawkes & David Robinson (The Cars). Members of Mission of Burma, The Replacements, Superchunk, Buffalo Tom, and other bands I'm not familiar with.

Tunes played included "Woolly Bully", "Louie Louie", "Psychotic Reaction" (The Count Five), "Pushin' Too Hard" (The Seeds), "Dirty Water" (The Standells), "Gloria" (Them), "I Wanna Be Your Dog" (The Stooges) (Lenny took his short off, a la Iggy Pop), "I Had Too Much To Dream Last Night" (The Electric Prunes), "Talk Talk" (The Music Machine) and "7 and 7 Is" (Love). Oh, and Lenny jumped on the audience and crowd surfed - he's 77!
