My plan was to move the appliances into the kitchen tonight. Spend a little while setting them up, making sure they worked. Maybe read the manuals a little bit. You know, taking it easy. Tomorrow, I would clean up the basement - put my tools back where they belong - take it easy some more. There were no tasks that needed to be done before cabinet installation, which would probably be on Thursday. Friday we could move all our stuff back into the cabinets, and it would be basically complete, except for the countertops. It was going to be a good week.

Nope.

First Cindy called the flooring people, who replied to her complaints that that is not the way they do business, and they would be over tomorrow to fix it. Good.

Then the countertop guy called. Said our countertops were done, and could they come to install? I said, "um, sure, how about Wednesday?" "We'll we're kinda busy that day. How is tomorrow?" "Um, fine? Th flooring people are coming, but I guess they can work around you." "Well, we can come early." "Sure." I figured that not only were they still a week or two out, they would give me a week's notice.

So I messaged Cindy to tell her the good news. She said "I guess we have a lot of work to do tonight." Here's where my head was at... I said "like what?" As soon as I hit send, I realized we needed to disconnect the current plumbing and take the old countertops out. And I remembered I had planned on removing the countertop from the peninsula and patching and painting. So my stress levels are starting to shoot up. I called Cindy to talk it over and figure out what was going on and what would have to happen. I was thinking I should call them back and see if they could do Friday. She made it clear that under no circumstances was I to postpone this installation a few days.

She's stressing out, and needs this done as soon as possible, so she has a kitchen again. Meanwhile, I'm stressing out, and trying to keep the kitchen in usable condition for as long as possible, while she had the room cleared out, even of the stuff we needed for supper. I honestly don't understand why I'm feeling so much stress. All of the difficult-to-figure-out work is done. All of the hard work is done. Pretty much all of the work is done! I guess I was just looking forward to some days that I wasn't rushed to get stuff done.

Cindy had taken the peninsula countertop off in the afternoon. Fortunately it didn't need patching. I threw a bit of paint on it. I disconnected the plumbing. We got the heavy sink out. I took off the countertops. The flooring guy had taken the wedges out from underneath one end of one of the cabinets, because he slid the flooring under it. So I had to re-wedge it.

Remodeling IS stressful. Part of it is the total disruption of things that have always been a constant in your life, like using the kitchen. It is not only mentally stressful, it also has profound impacts on your body. So be easy on yourself and Cindy.

My Mom worked as an aid at the Family Planning clinic here for years. She assisted the doctor, a woman with 12(!!) children of her own. When some young lady would come in and say that they had missed their period, or some such thing the doctor would always ask what was going on in their life. Very often they said something like "well, I moved, but that was a really good thing" or we re-did the kitchen. It really does have profound effects on the body, good deal or not.
I hear you about things not getting done. I'm STILL catching up with all the stuff that needs doing here in Ukiah. Donald and I spent the morning digging out and then filling in part of the ditch from the shop to the 5th wheel. That job started last winter. Also I'm still working on the wiring in the shop. SLOOOOWWWLY.
