Femmes Fatale
Feb. 4th, 2001 01:58 pmI met Cyn’s sister Devonne and her husband Stan. We met them at this old man bar, where they hang out when they’re in town. (They drive a truck.) Devonne told us about one of the regulars at this bar. George.
George was an angry old man. Always grumbling and grousing and muttering to himself. He put his wife in a nursing home because she suffered some malady and couldn’t talk. George had a problem with paying his water bill. It seems the sewer backed up into his basement, and the Sewerage department wouldn’t clean it up. So he didn’t pay his bill. Then they turned off his water and electricity. So he couldn’t bathe. And he spent all day at the bar. And he stank.
One of the bartenders handed Stan some money and told him to play some loud music on the jukebox to make George leave. Stan chose Hendrix’s "Star Spangled Banner." It worked. George picked up his newspaper and left. Grumbling the whole time.
The next day, George was back. Devonne decided to play the Violent Femmes. Their whole first album. George made it to Add It Up (the fourth song) before he cracked. Again, he picked up his paper and left. A couple of days later George hadn’t come back. One of the bartenders said, "he’s dead. I know it." A couple of days later, they found out he really was dead. He appeared to have dropped dead shortly after returning from the bar that day.
