Midday at Zion on day 2. The trail to lower Emerald Falls is paved, and not too strenuous.

After leaving the parking lot, it crosses the virgin river.

The falls come over a rock ledge that curves around, with the trail underneath.

Then you climb a bit, and come to Middle Emerald Pool, which is a small wet area on the rock ledge that is Lower Emerald Falls. From there you walk upward a ways, and come to Upper Emerald Falls.

polarizer

Here's a photo tip. If you ever go to Zion, use a polarizing filter. Here are two photos I took, side by side. All the camera settings were the same, the only thing that changed was that I spun the polarizer into proper position for the second.

A polarizer blocks out a large portion of reflected light. It's commonly used to cut down on glare from water or glass. Though this is not water or glass, the difference is obvious. The sandstone reflects a lot of light, particularly the black-stained parts. Those parts are so reflective that it hardly looks dark when the light is right (or wrong). It also has a nice effect on the sky.
