kitchen remodel 11
Aug. 28th, 2021 12:02 amEarlier in the week, the cabinet maker moved the install from Sunday to Monday. Yesterday, the flooring people moved the install from Wednesday to Tuesday. That's cutting it close. I had the day off. Even with cabinet install moved back to Monday I'm still running out of time.
I redid yesterday's plumbing. It worked, but I had two issues with it. One was that I had forgotten to put the trim ring over the pipe before I soldered it all together. That's minor, but I also realized the shut-off valve on top was too high. It would be behind the bowls of the sink. So I took it apart and red-did it. I just had a T coming out from the wall, with a valve on each end (one for the dishwasher, one for the sink). Much simpler. The only issue is that it's kinda low, and therefore close to all the other things there, but I didn't want to mess with another short pipe on an elbow to make the T higher on the tree. Yesterday's plumbing had soldered threaded connectors, so I had screwed the valves onto the ends of the pipes. Today's version used the kind with compression fittings. Much simpler.
Then I did the electrical for the dishwasher. This took a little research and a trip to the hardware store. There was a flexible steel conduit (BX) coming out of a hole in the wall. I wanted to yank the BX and replace it with non-metallic cable (like Romex). But I wasn't sure if the NM was OK to have in the open under the appliance, and I wasn't sure it was OK to run it through a hole in the wall. Research indicated that this was all accepted, but in the end I decided I wanted to use BX, and have it wired into a box. I found a box with an appropriate fitting. I got some BX and a BX cutter. The damn thing was $45. Not sure it was worth it for only two more cuts - I wish I'd discovered it before I started this project! - but maybe I'll use it again someday.
That's all I got done before supper. That and some cleanup. It wasn't much, but at least I'm done with all the plumbing and electrical (short of wiring the receptacles in the boxes).
After supper I did drywall. Four small pieces. Two of them had to fit around the three pipes coming out of the wall. That took quite a while. Another small piece I had to cut to go around the box for the dishwasher. I wanted it to fit really closely, so I was going to be really careful. There's a huge gap on one side. :-( Yesterday's easy solution with the valve attached via compression fitting turned out to be a problem. There was a trim ring behind it, but the valve took up so much space, there wasn't room behind it for the drywall. I had to cut a depression in the drywall, for the trim ring to rest in.
Then I did a little bit of mudding. First problem - my drywall is too thick. I measured what was in there, and it was thicker than 1/2 inch. So I got 5/8 drywall. Apparently the stuff is actually 1/2 inch, so there's a big step down from the new to the existing drywall. I'm not happy. Second problem is that the joint compound is very old, and has dried out a bit. I added water, but it's still a bit lumpy.
Tomorrow morning I remove the other lower cabinet. If there's time I do a bit more mud. Then I leave for the afternoon. In the evening I sand and maybe do more mud. Sunday is final sand and paint. Fortunately, all that uneven drywall and sanding and single coat of paint will be hidden by the cabinets. Monday we get the lower cabinets installed.
